How to Build the Perfect Christmas Tablescape: A Step-by-Step Guide with Chelsea Goslin-Minter

The festive season is a time for gathering, sharing and making memories, and there’s no better way to set the stage for those moments than with a beautifully designed Christmas tablescape. Whether you're hosting an intimate family dinner or a big festive bash, a well-curated tablescape can elevate your Christmas meal, making it feel extra special. From showstopper centrepieces to the smallest details, here’s how to build the perfect Christmas tablescape, featuring expert advice from Chelsea Goslin-Minter; 31 year old, content creator and interior design addict!

  • 1. Choose a Colour Palette

  •

Start with a cohesive colour scheme that fits the mood you want to create. Traditional Christmas colours like red, green, gold and silver evoke a festive atmosphere, while more modern or rustic Christmas tablescapes might lean toward neutral tones, whites, deep greens or metallic accents.

  1. - Traditional: Red, Green, Gold, White
    - Elegant/Classic: Gold, Silver, White
    - Rustic/Natural: Green, Burgundy, Wood Tones, Ivory
    - Modern/Minimalist: Black, White, Gold, Silver

Once you've chosen your palette, keep it consistent across the table, from linens and plates to napkins and décor elements.
  • Chelsea’s festive colour palette:

  1. When it comes to a festive palette, I’m definitely more of a Rustic/ Natural girl, who is drawn to those earthy greens and browns. But, I love to elevate my scheme by adding in pops of red for a traditional touch, while mixing in elements of gold and silver mercury glass to add some elegance too.

  • 2. Start with a Statement Table Runner or Tablecloth

  •

The foundation of any great tablescape is the table itself. A tablecloth or table runner sets the tone for your design. You can choose a luxurious, textured fabric like velvet for a sophisticated look, or a simple linen or cotton tablecloth for a more relaxed feel.

  1. - Tip: A table runner can add dimension without covering the entire table, allowing your wooden or stone table to peek through for a rustic touch.
  • Chelsea’s top tips:

  1. Try to make sure your tablecloth/runner not only compliments but also balances your scheme. If your tablescape is fairly simplistic and paired back, why not add a playful element to it by adding some pattern. And if your tablescape is pretty busy and full, try using a more neutral table cloth or runner in a lovely linen to add some softness and additional texture.

  • 3. Layer with Beautiful Dishes and Tableware

  •

Next, layer your plates, glasses and tableware in a way that is both functional and beautiful. For a traditional look, go for fine china with a festive pattern or use classic white plates paired with gold-rimmed accents for a more contemporary take.

  1. - Dinner Plates: Choose a sturdy set of plates that can stand up to a full Christmas dinner. Opt for patterned plates for a fun touch or solid plates for a sleek, minimal look.

    - Tableware: Invest in quality silverware that complements the overall theme. A set with delicate detailing or a shiny, modern finish can make the table feel more luxurious.

    - Glasses: Glassware is an essential element of your table. Use wine glasses, water goblets and maybe even champagne flutes to complement your meal. Keep them polished for maximum shine.
  • Chelsea’s top tips:

  •
  • When it comes to tableware, my top tip is to always make sure that what you use feels cohesive and compliments your overall scheme. If you’re going for a more neutral scheme, perhaps layer white crockery for a timeless look but perhaps use plates that have some texture or that have an organic shape to add some extra interest. Or perhaps add some fun to your scheme with a patterned plate or one that has a colourful trim for an additional pop of personality.

  • 4. Create a Stunning Centrepiece

  1. Your centrepiece will be the focal point of the table, so don’t be afraid to go all out. It can be as simple or as elaborate as you like, but make sure it enhances the overall theme of your Christmas tablescape and doesn’t obstruct loved ones’ ability to have a natter.

    - Floral Arrangements: A bouquet of poinsettias, roses or fresh evergreen branches will immediately give your table a festive flair. For a more modern look, opt for a monochromatic flower arrangement, such as white roses or red tulips.

    - Candles: Candles are essential for creating a warm, cosy atmosphere. Arrange a set of candles of varying heights down the centre of the table. Consider using elegant candlesticks or lanterns for added charm.

    - Christmas-Themed Decor: Pinecones, holly sprigs or a few small ornaments can add a bit of holiday cheer without overwhelming the space. For a whimsical touch, consider adding miniature Christmas trees or little figurines like reindeer or Santa.

    - Edible Centrepieces: Consider incorporating edible elements into your centrepiece, such as a tiered tray of our Christmas cookies, Christmas brownies or a tasty Christmas Selection Box. Or for something more dramatic, our Christmas Trifle Cake is the perfect centrepiece showstopper.
  • Chelsea’s top tips:

  1. When it comes to centrepieces, I tend to try and build them into the tablescape and keep in mind the usability of the space. Would I have enough space to put my drink down if I sat here? Can I see the person opposite me? You want your table to be beautiful but also not obstructive. I always try to add varying heights and spread my centre piece/s across the table to draw the guests eyes up and down the table. Bud vases are my favourite way to add some interest with flowers, along with candle sticks too. And an edible centrepiece is always a good idea.

  2.

  • 5. Use Festive Napkins and Place Settings

  1. Napkins are an easy way to introduce texture, colour and seasonal charm into your tablescape. Consider folding cloth napkins into elegant shapes like a poinsettia or a simple triangle for a chic touch. To really impress your guests, try napkin rings in metallic tones or natural elements like cinnamon sticks or sprigs of rosemary.

    - Place Cards: Personalised place cards add a thoughtful and polished touch to your table. Whether it’s a calligraphed card or a rustic tag tied to a sprig of evergreen, it’ll make each guest feel special and help with seating arrangements.
  • Chelsea’s top tips:

  1.
  2. There’s so many great ways to have fun with your Christmas placecards and napkins. I’m a sucker for a bow and a great idea is to tie bows around your guests wine glasses and have their name on their bow. That way you can use it as a place setting, but also they will never lose their drink either!
  3.

  • 6. Add Sparkle with Accents

  1. Subtle metallic touches can make a Christmas tablescape feel more elegant and festive. Think metallic table runners, gold cutlery, silver candle holders or sparkly placemats.

    - Tree Ornaments: Hang a few small ornaments from the back of each chair or scatter a few across the table. Opt for gold, silver, or clear ornaments for a refined look.

    - Tinsel & Glitter: Lightly scatter gold or silver tinsel across the table for a touch of shimmer without going overboard.
  • Chelsea’s top tips:

  1. My favourite way to add a touch of sparkle would be to use gold cutlery (forever my fave) and perhaps including brass candle holders throughout the table too. I also love silver mercury glass so you could add in some ornaments or decorations and some fairy lights for extra ambience.

  • 7. Consider the Lighting

  1. Lighting is everything when it comes to setting the right mood. A combination of candlelight and soft, ambient lighting will create a warm, inviting atmosphere. Dim the main lights, and let your table be illuminated by the glow of candles or fairy lights.

    - Fairy Lights: Stringing some soft white fairy lights down the centre of the table or wrapping them around the centrepiece can add a magical touch to the evening.

    - Dim the Overhead Lights: Create an intimate ambience by dimming the overhead lights. This will allow the soft flicker of candles and the sparkle of glassware to shine.
  • Chelsea’s top tips:

  1. In our house, the big light is banned and is strictly just for aesthetic purposes. But, you can never have enough lamps. To create a setting that feels warm and inviting, utilise your table lamps and wall lights for a softer glow, along with candles and fairy lights. You want it to feel cosy but of course want your guests to be able to see their food.
  2.

  • 8. Don’t Forget the Details

  1. The final touches are what really make a tablescape feel polished. Small details like Christmas-themed coasters, a garland along the table edge, or festive salt and pepper shakers can tie everything together.

    - Scented Touches: The scent of fresh pine or cinnamon can enhance the sensory experience of your table. Use pine-scented candles or essential oils in the room for a comforting Christmas aroma.
  • Chelsea’s top tips:

  1. I think scent is one of the most important parts when it comes to hosting. I always love to have candles burning throughout my home, but also love to use an electric diffuser with essential oils. My favourite for the festive season is Winter by The White Company.

  • 9. Keep It Comfortable

  1. A beautiful Christmas tablescape can often have you focusing on looks, but it’s also about ensuring everyone feels comfy! Make sure there’s enough space between place settings for easy movement. Keep the centrepiece low enough so everyone can see each other across the table. And most importantly, ensure the table is set up in a way that’s practical for devouring your Christmas dinner!

A Christmas tablescape is an opportunity to showcase your style and creativity while setting the stage for a festive and unforgettable Christmas gathering. By combining your favourite colours, textures and seasonal elements, you can craft a beautiful table that will delight your guests and make your Christmas dinner feel truly magical. Whether you prefer traditional charm or a more modern look, the perfect tablescape is all about creating a warm and inviting space where everyone feels welcome and cherished.

  • Chelsea's final thoughts...

  1. I think my most important tip when it comes to creating a tablescape would be to have fun with it! And if you’re struggling to find a theme or need ideas, Pinterest solves everything. I’m always saving inspiration throughout the year, as there could be elements I love that I can take and help to build my own tablescape, even if the inspiration isn’t necessarily for that season. I also think while it’s great to find images we love and inspire us, try not to copy it exactly. You want the space to feel like you, so always add your own personal touches and personality where you can.
