Meet Billy Murphy

If you don't know Billy yet: he's a painter based in Essex who spends his days turning bears, dinosaurs and the occasional confused-looking animal into small paintings about why life is absurd and worth laughing at anyway. He posts new work most days, first on Badly Drawn Bears (his page on X) and on Instagram as @billymurphyart, and thousands of people show up for it every week. You Deserve the Little Treat, out with Orion Publishing on 3 September, is his first book.

What Raksha Bandhan is, and why it matters to us

Raksha Bandhan falls on the full moon of Shravana, usually in August, and the whole festival is built around one gesture: a sister ties a rakhi, a thread bracelet, around her brother's wrist, and he promises to look out for her in return. It's been celebrated across India for centuries and travels with families wherever they've settled, including a good number of our customers in Birmingham, Scotland, Bradford and London.
Annabel and Emily built this whole business as sisters, so a festival about siblings tying knots and making promises to each other isn't exactly a stretch for us. We just wanted to give the day the thing every festival at Cutter & Squidge eventually gets: a brownie.

 

Modernising the tradition, not replacing it

Raksha Bandhan collection pairs a rakhi bracelet with a box of our Ultimate Chocolate Brownies, because a thread on its own is a lovely gesture, and a thread with the sweet treat that traditionally goes alongside it is closer to the whole ritual. We're not trying to stand in for it — the tying, the tilak, the mithai your mum makes better than we ever could. We're adding to it, the same way our gulab jamun-inspired cake sits next to a diya at Diwali without pretending to be one. Rakhi gifting has always evolved with whoever's celebrating it — this is just our version, built for siblings who are a train, a flight or a border away from each other rather than down the hall.
