Hello, lovely people - Annabel and Emily here. As the founders of a bustling bakery, we’ve learned that the right equipment makes all the difference. Over the years, we've picked up a few trusty favourites that we really couldn’t live without. If you’ve ever wondered what helps us turn out those mouth-watering biskies, cakes, brownies, well, here’s the inside scoop. Let’s dive in!
Let’s be real - we love a good bit of elbow grease, but sometimes you just need the power of a good stand mixer to make sure everything is evenly mixed, smooth and ready for the oven. From kneading dough to whipping up buttercream, this little beauty does it all. It’s our secret weapon for getting consistent, beautiful bakes every time.
Brands we love: It HAS to be Kitchen Aid - we both have orange ones (of course!) but they come in lots of different colours and styles - their 2025 colour butter is seriously gorgeous. We’ll always have a soft spot for a classic Kenwood too! These are both investment pieces, but will last you a lifetime.
Top tip: Make sure to use the right attachment for the job! A dough hook for bread and a whisk for meringues will give you the best results.
Ok, we get it, a rolling pin might not seem like an exciting tool, but trust us when we say it's the unsung hero of our kitchen. If you've ever tried rolling out dough for scones, pastries or biscuits, you know it can be a bit... tricky. You need the perfect amount of pressure, the right amount of glide and, of course, a rolling pin that won’t wobble or lose its shape halfway through.
Over the years, we’ve tried every type of rolling pin under the sun, but our favourite is a classic, heavy wooden one. It just feels right in our hands and gives us the precision we need when rolling out dough to the perfect thickness. If you're baking pastries, trust us, this one’s non-negotiable!
Brands we love: Joseph & Joseph are great, but a wooden pin from your local supermarket works just fine! That said, the Joseph precision pins are adjustable, which is so handy if you need to roll out different levels of thickness or just want a bit more flexibility. You can adjust the rings to raise the rolling surface, making it super useful for all kinds of baking!
Top tip: Chill your dough before rolling it out - it'll make it easier to handle and less likely to stick!
We can’t stress this enough - you NEED a sharp knife! A good chef’s knife is a game-changer when it comes to everything from chopping fresh fruit for a sweet filling to slicing through a freshly baked cake. The precision is amazing and it cuts down on the frustration of struggling with a blunt blade. Plus, there's nothing more satisfying than a smooth, effortless cut - especially when you’re about to serve up a beautiful loaf of banana bread or cut into a warm cake and, let's be honest, for those Instagram-worthy baking moments!
Brands we love: Splurge on Global Knives for the sharpest knives - worth every penny!
Top tip: Always cut away from your body and use a stable cutting surface to avoid accidents - plus, it’ll make your knife last longer!
And last but certainly not least, let’s talk about baking trays. These may not get the same spotlight as the stand mixer or rolling pin, but they are vital to the whole process. We’ve gone through so many different types of trays over the years - some good, some not so good - but after much trial and error, we’ve found the perfect ones.
Our go-to trays are durable, non-stick (so no more pesky cakes sticking to the bottom!) and the right size for everything from cookies to swiss roll cakes. There’s something about the perfect tray that makes baking feel like a breeze. We can pop our bakes in the oven, confident that they’ll cook evenly and come out looking gorgeous. It’s the simple things, really.
Brands we love: Silverwood baking sheets are perfect as they don't warp - this is vital when perfecting the bake on cookies!
Top tip: Line your trays with parchment paper for even easier cleanup and to prevent sticking - trust us, you’ll thank us later!
Finally, when it comes to baking, a good spatula is a must, but there’s no need to break the bank! We’re all about rotating our spatulas regularly - why settle for one when you can have a few to mix things up? Spending big on a fancy spatula is totally unnecessary when a basic, affordable one gets the job done just as well. Plus, by switching between a couple, we save them from wearing out too quickly. The secret? Look for something sturdy, heat-resistant and easy to clean - no need to splurge on the “premium” ones.
